A nationwide concern is arising as federal agencies are sounding the alarm about Salmonella infections linked to ready-to-eat (RTE) charcuterie meat products. The implicated items include Busseto brand Charcuterie Sampler and Fratelli Beretta brand Antipasto Gran Beretta, prompting dual alerts from both the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)…
The specific products of concern are the 24-oz. twin-pack (two 12-oz. trays) of Fratelli Beretta brand Antipasto Gran Beretta sold at Costco and the 18-oz. twin-pack (two 9-oz. trays) of Busseto brand Charcuterie Sampler sold Salmonella Outbreak at Sam’s Club. Despite being unavailable at these retailers now, consumers are warned that these products may still be in-home freezers.
Since January 5, an investigation has identified 47 cases of Salmonella illnesses across 22 states, with 10 hospitalizations linked to these products. The latest update includes 23 additional illnesses in eight more states, accompanied by five new hospitalizations.
The potentially contaminated products can be identified by the establishment numbers “EST. 7543B” and “EST. The USDA mark of inspection, which is printed on the package or inside it. Authorities are actively collaborating to investigate this multi-state outbreak, which has onset dates ranging from November 20, 2023, through January 1, 2024.
Minnesota played a pivotal role in this investigation by identifying the outbreak strain in an unopened Busseto brand charcuterie sampler, leading to recall 01-2024 on January 3, 2024.
Salmonella contamination is challenging to detect as affected food may not exhibit any unusual characteristics. This bacteria can cause illness in anyone, but those with weakened immune systems, including infants, children, seniors, and individuals with underlying health issues, are at a higher risk of severe complications.
Symptoms of Salmonella infection include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. Healthy adults typically recover in four to seven days, but severe cases may necessitate hospitalization.
Special attention is warranted for older adults, children, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals who are more susceptible to severe illness. Some infected individuals may not display symptoms but can still spread the infection to others.
Consumers who have purchased these products are strongly advised not to consume them. Instead, these items should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase to prevent further potential health risks. Stay informed and prioritize your health by heeding these alerts and taking appropriate actions if you have these products in your possession.
